Funding Opportunities for Doctoral and Post-Doctoral Fellowships in the Ethics of Health Research and Policy, a CIHR Training Project (2002/2009)
Through this program, the Ethics of Health Research and Policy, the University of British Columbia W. Maurice Young Centre for Applied Ethics and Dalhousie University Department of Bioethics and Department of Philosophy have enabled a number of Doctoral and Post-Doctoral Fellowships to acquire new skills and train in areas related to research ethics and health policy.
Sponsored by the Canadian Institutes for Health Research, the Michael Smith Health Research Foundation and the Nova Scotia Health Research Foundation, the objective of the Ethics of Health Research and Policy program is to train the next generation of ethicists for public and private sector policy-making bodies, research institutions and organizations, and universities. Through this program, students work across disciplines engaged in health research and policy, bringing an in-depth understanding of alternative ways to frame ethical issues and the relevance of context to practical decision-making.
The ethical quality of research and the policies governing research conducted, sponsored or regulated by Canadian public, private, and not-for-profit organizations is essential for public trust and the credibility of Canada's research sector. However, Canada currently faces a critical shortage of trained practitioners in this complex and important area. Through the Ethics of Health Research and Policy, UBC and Dalhousie University have been able to offer Doctoral and Post-doctoral Fellows an outstanding opportunity to train as Canada's next generation of bioethicists.
(Note: Due to the program's focus on training Canadian bioethicists, foreign placements has been limited to applicants demonstrating exceptional merit.)
